On November 18th, at the Elder Hall of the University of Adelaide, 23 boys from our Junior School participated in the 2023 Australian Voice Chinese Singing Competition. As the winner of the Most Creative prize last year, our Junior School was invited to compete and perform this year on the stage in the finals.
Ethan (Year 2), Kabir (Year 2), Kush (Year 2), Jackson (Year 2), Samuel (Year 1), Aiden (Year 1), and Naysha (Year 1) performed “Give Animals a Home” and won the third prize. The boys and their parents were incredibly proud, and they delivered an amazing performance on stage, with the audience cheering and clapping for them.
Zain (Year 6), Huxley (Year 6), and Easton (Year 6) performed “Blue and White Porcelain” and won the Most Creative prize. They had the opportunity to sing this song on stage with the musician Mark Ballas from Melbourne, who had previously sung a song with Jay Chou in person earlier this year. The boys demonstrated remarkable control and adaptability in an unfamiliar stage and environment.
William (Year 4), Ian (Year 2), Max (Year 4), and Owen (Year 3) performed “Daylilies” and won the Most Creative prize. They sang this song with four girls from St Aloysius College, delivering a stunning performance.
Additionally, 12 Chinese mother tongue boys from our Junior School sang the Australian national anthem in both English and Chinese, as well as the Chinese national anthem on stage at the beginning of the event.
This experience has been incredible for the boys, allowing them to share and expand their Chinese learning within the wider Chinese community beyond South Australia. With over 80 entries competing this year, all three of our Chinese singing entries won a prize. It’s a remarkable achievement to celebrate at the end of 2023, and we eagerly anticipate another outstanding year in 2024.
