Indigenous Education Program

The Indigenous Education Program embraces Indigenous students and their culture as an essential part of our diverse community of learning. Through meaningful relationships with Indigenous students and their communities, the Indigenous Education program enables all students to develop a deep understanding of the history and culture of Indigenous Australia.

The Indigenous Education Program aims to:
• Provide scholarships and ongoing holistic support for Indigenous students
• Weave Indigenous knowledges and culture through learning
• Build reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities

Indigenous Youth Leadership Program

Working in partnership with St Peter’s College, the program is run by the Smith Family with funding support through the National Indigenous Australians Agency. The government-funded program aims to close the gaps in Indigenous educational disadvantage by creating greater access to additional educational choices for Indigenous students, particularly those from remote and very remote areas of the country.

In addition to helping Indigenous students achieve their educational aspirations, the program supports the development of positive role models and leaders to inspire other Indigenous students.

Within the curriculum

Directed at all students from the ELC through to Year 12, the Indigenous Education Program develops and demonstrates respect for Indigenous knowledges and culture in their language, behaviour and learning.

Since 2017, St Peter’s College’s Reconciliation Action Plan has directed the school community in taking steps towards reconciliation including weaving Indigenous culture through curriculum, creating a culturally safe environment and building connections in our community.

Community Connections

St Peter’s College aims to build relationships with Indigenous communities and services to strengthen our program and for opportunities to serve, learn and collaborate. With service as a core value of the School, the Indigenous Education Program seeks out opportunities for staff and students to serve communities and further develop respect for Indigenous culture and knowledge.

St Peter’s College is fortunate to engage the skills, knowledge and experience of Indigenous man, Uncle John Lochowiak who has connections with Pitjantjatjara, Kaurna, Ramindjeri and Arrernte communities. Uncle John acts as an Indigenous Advisor to the School, providing advice, support and mentoring within the Indigenous Education Program.
